Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Margaret Smith MSP has urged the Scottish Government to protect the autonomy of Scotland's higher education institutions following a proposed Government shake up of funding for the sector.
A taskforce set up by the Scottish Government today revealed plans for two separate funds for universities - a general fund for mainstream work and a "horizon" fund to help them achieve Scottish Government priorities.
Commenting, Mrs Smith said:
"I am concerned that the Government now propose to fund universities based on their compliance with Government priorities. We must not lose sight of the wider benefits of higher education.
"The autonomy of Scotland's higher education institutions must be protected. They must be able to make their own decisions in relation to courses and not forced down a particular route because of a political agenda.
"Whilst I welcome this review, the membership of the taskforce does not include key stakeholders such as representatives from student bodies and university staff groups."
