Borders MP Michael Moore is inviting local schools to take part in a national Christmas card competition to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Big Ben and the world-famous Clock Tower.
Mr Moore has written to local primary and secondary schools with details of how to enter the competition, which involves designing a Christmas card for 2009 with the theme of "Parliament and Big Ben". It is open to pupils in Primary 1-7 and Secondary 1-3, and prizes include the chance to climb to the top of Big Ben and meet the Keeper of the Great Clock. The winners of the competition, organised by the Houses of Parliament, will be invited to a reception in the House of Commons.
Mr Moore needs to receive entries by 28th February to send the winning designs and runners-up onto the next judging stage.
He said:
"This is a wonderful opportunity for local pupils to engage with Parliament in an enjoyable way. Big Ben and the Clock Tower are recognised across the globe, both as symbols of the UK and of democracy.
"There is a wealth of young artistic talent in the Borders. This competition offers a great opportunity to showcase this talent, and I look forward to receiving all the entries and school pupils' ideas."
