Jeremy Purvis MSP, Liberal Democrat Finance spokesperson, has reaffirmed the Party's commitment to a fairer tax system with permanent tax cuts for lower and middle earners.
Jeremy Purvis MSPSpeaking ahead of a debate on the Liberal Democrats economic recovery plan at the Perth Conference, Mr Purvis said:
"Liberal Democrats will today, with one voice, condemn the most complex, unfair, least progressive and least environmentally friendly system of taxation Scotland has ever had.
"Under Labour, the tax code is more than 10,134 pages long. The lowest
quarter of taxpayers pay more than six times their income in tax than the richest quarter.
"This tax system is broken and the economy is being hampered as a result."
"Liberal Democrats want to see a system based on a fairer taxes and a
permanent tax cut for people on lower and middle incomes. Despite
opposition to this sensible way forward at the Scottish Parliament, we
will continue to fight for lower, fairer taxes.
"At both Holyrood and Westminster, Liberal Democrats have been the most
vocal critic but also the voice of reason throughout the economic
downturn.
"The economic storm recovery plan that we secured during budget
negotiations is the first step towards short term economic recovery. But we must move towards a system that brings about long term economic
stability.
"Vince Cable has set the pace during the economic crisis, and when the
time comes to vote on our plans at the UK general election, we are
confident that voters will turn to the Liberal Democrats."
