Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Tavish Scott MSP has demanded the Justice Secretary rules out the Chief Inspector of Constabulary's suggestion to disband all police forces in Scotland immediately.
The Chief Inspector is calling for a single force, which would be led by one Commissioner or Chief Constable.
Commenting, Mr Scott said:
"This is a mad idea and the Justice Secretary should rule it out immediately.
"It's crucial that there is distance between the police forces and politics. A single police force, headed up by one Commissioner who would be appointed by the Justice Secretary is far too cosy a relationship.
"We must not let the police forces be the next victims of the SNP Government's centralising power grab."
