Liberal Democrat MEP Elspeth Attwooll has welcomed a European Commission commitment to working towards the introduction of a standardised charger for all mobile phones.
At the European Parliament in Strasbourg Commissioner Gunther Verheugen announced that the European Commission will work not only for the introduction of a standardised charger for mobile phones but also many other types of electronic appliances, such as cameras, laptops and mp3 players.Elspeth Attwooll MEP
Commenting, the MEP for Scotland said:
"This can only be good for us as consumers, both in terms of cost and convenience, as we will no longer have to replace perfectly good chargers when we change handsets.
But perhaps more importantly it will help cut down on unnecessary waste, to the benefit of the environment. I hope that the Commission's commitment will now speed things up. It's important for this to into effect as soon as possible."
