Jo Swinson MP joined the Q&A panel at the star-studded 'Rally for Change' event last night calling for electoral reform.
The event was organised to launch a new campaign, 'Vote for a Change', which is calling for a referendum on electoral reform before the next General Election. The evening saw performances from KT Tunstall and Billy Bragg, and speakers alongside Jo Swinson included Blur's Dave Rowntree and Green campaigner Peter Tatchell, with video messages from the likes of Martin Bell, Shirley Williams and journalist Clare Rayner.Jo Swinson MP: East Dunbartonshire
Commenting, Jo Swinson said:
"It is clearly wrong that around 800,000 voters in swing constituencies across middle England get to choose who governs the country, while no Government since 1935 has had more than 50% of the vote. The vast majority of people in the UK are represented by an MP for whom they did not vote.
"New Labour promised in their 1997 election manifesto they would hold a referendum on electoral reform, but they have failed to live up to that promise. We have forms of proportional representation in Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly, and it is about time Westminster caught up."
