MP Michael Moore has expressed his disappointment at the defeat of a Liberal Democrat amendment to the Finance Bill which aimed to block Government plans to increase duty on beer by 2%.
Mr Moore voted against the Government's plans when they were debated in the House of Commons last week. He has argued that this latest rise in alcohol duty will penalise responsible consumers, and increase the financial pressure on pubs and landlords around the Borders.Michael Moore MP: Berwickshire, Roxburgh & Selkirk
The Campaign for Real Ale have estimated that 5 pubs are closing every day as a result of falling levels of alcohol consumption, and the pressures of the economic slowdown. Opponents of the duty increases have also expressed concern over their impact on the competitiveness of the Scottish whiskey industry, which relies heavily on exports.
Commenting Mr Moore said:
'The increase in duty on alcohol will not curb problem drinking, but instead cause further harm to Borders pubs that are already suffering as a result of the economic downturn.
'In rural areas, the pub is often a vital part of the local community. The Government should be helping landlords, not punishing them with another unnecessary tax hike'.
