Alan Reid, Liberal Democrat MP for Argyll & Bute, called on Whyte & MacKay to re-thing their plans to make two workers redundant at their Jura distillery.
Mr Reid said, "Two job losses are a severe blow to a small community like Jura. I hope to speak to Whyte & MacKay's Chief Executive, John Beard, later today and try to persuade him not to go ahead with these redundancies.Alan Reid MP: Argyll & Bute
"I warned the Government during the recent Budget debate that their whisky duty increases and their plans for inflation busting duty increases every year would cause immense damage to the whisky industry. It gives me no pleasure in saying that these warnings have been proven correct as Whyte & MacKay have given 'punitive tax legislation' in the UK as a major reason for these job losses.
"The Government must stop taxing the whisky industry to death."
