Moore and Purvis: Lochcarron Decision Highlights Need for Government Action

MP Michael Moore and MSP Jeremy Purvis have demanded government action in response to the latest textiles job losses announced by Lochcarron of Scotland. Ahead of a textiles debate secured by Mr Moore in the House of Commons on Wednesday, Mr Moore says the Lochcarron announcement underlines the need for urgent government action in support of the textiles sector.

Earlier this morning Mr Moore spoke to the managing director of the company following the announcement that its knitwear operation in Hawick, which employs 30 people, is to close. He was briefed on the economic challenges which have led the company, reluctantly, to make the decision. And he was told about the consultation process which will now take place with staff with the firm hopeful that jobs will be found with other companies in the town.

Mr Moore said:

"This is another sad day for Hawick and underlines the severe challenges facing the industry. When the UK textiles minister answers my debate in the Commons tomorrow, he will have to have some serious answers to the questions being put to him by the industry.

"It is vital that the employees and their families get all the support they need to deal with this grim announcement. And the companies need real support right now on finance, energy and training. There must be an end to government complacency on the problems facing manufacturing businesses."

Mr Purvis added:

"This is a world class company which does not make difficult decisions like this lightly. The Scottish government has had ample opportunity to support this industry in the past year and has not bothered. This must be a wake up call to Scottish Ministers that the situation is urgent and needs direct attention right now."
