Commenting on figures released today which show that 76% of people who have been a victim of stalking did not report it to the police and that 34% of those people felt it was too trivial a crime to report to police, Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Robert Brown MSP said:
"It is concerning that so few people who have been a victim of this crime reported it to police. It is even more worrying that 34% of those people felt this crime was too trivial to report.
"The Scottish Parliament was right to introduce a new offence of stalking this year. We must ensure that victims feel they will be taken seriously if they report this crime to the police.
"The Scottish Government working in conjunction with police forces across Scotland must do all they can to hammer home that any type of stalking is a crime.
"We must ensure that the people feel safe in Scotland.
