Commenting on proposed EU wide sanctions against the Faroe Islands and Iceland because of the ongoing dispute over mackerel quotas, Liberal Democrat Fisheries spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

"The disregard that both the Faroe Islands and Iceland have shown for sustainable fishing has been rightly and roundly condemned.

"While no punitive action should be undertaken lightly, the continued failure to reach a suitable agreement is becoming increasingly untenable.

"With stocks of this key species for the Scottish fleet at serious risk of being irreversibly harmed by the actions of these two countries, sanctions must now be considered in an effort to bring Iceland and Faroe to their senses."
